Immune System Basics
I know in my last couple of videos I have touched on the immune system and today is no different. We tend to take our immunity for granted until something bad goes wrong and it’s then and only then that we want to stand up and pay attention.
So what is the definition of the immune system?
In layman terms, the immune system is a complex network of cells and proteins that defends the body against infection. The main job of our immune system is to protect our body from bacteria 🧫 and viruses 🦠.
Our immune system works by differentiating our body’s cells from foreign cells, and destroying any that could potentially be harmful. Our immune system for the most part does its job, however this can cause alarm if the immune system wrongly classifies our healthy cells and starts attacking them instead.
I bet you didn’t know that when we have a virus 🦠 it’s not the virus that makes us sick, it’s actually our immune systems efforts to get rid of it. For example: when our body temperature rises giving us a fever our immune system is making it hot enough to kill the virus, leaving us tired and drained.
Hey guys what’s up this is Tricia from Mind•Body•Soul. Hope you’re healthy, well, and staying positive.
In this video I will be talking about the basics of the immune system.
WHY IS HAVING A ROBUST IMMUNE SYSTEM IMPORTANT?
The majority of us don’t really think about this question. We kinda just assume the “belief” that we are going to fall ill every winter because after all winter 🥶 is flu 😷 and cold season. Everyday we are exposed to germs. Those invaders can include bacteria, viruses, parasites, even a fungus, all with the potential to make us sick. They are everywhere – in our homes, our environment, our workplace. If our immune system is weak we are more likely to pick up these infections and diseases and can often be serious and even fatal.
HEALTHY GUT
I bet you didn’t know that 70 to 80 % of our immune cells live in our gut. Which is why developing healthy eating habits are essential in the development of a healthy immune system especially in the early years of life. So if you are a mom, starting your littles off with good nutrition is crucial in building a strong immune system.
BREAKDOWN OF THE IMMUNE SYSTEM
Yes, the immune system breaks down from time to time, but your lifestyle habits play a vital role in keeping you healthy. Unhealthy eating habits, being sedentary, sleep deprivation, and stress can all contribute to a weakened immune system. Bacteria and viruses 🦠 can overwhelm the body when our immune system is depleted.
So here are my recommendations during flu season to strengthen your immune system.
Multi-Vitamin
Vitamin C
Vitamin D
Zinc
Echinacea
Probiotic
Healthy eating habits Regular exercise Meditation Alkaline water Getting out in Nature (you get the point)
